What we collect, and what we do with it

The short version

We collect what the app needs to work: your phone number to sign you in, a name and photo so your squad knows who you are, the clips you record, and what you tap so we can tell which parts of the app are worth keeping.

We do not track you across other apps and websites. There is no advertising identifier in this app, no attribution SDK, and no ad network receives anything about you. That is why Homework never shows you the “allow tracking” prompt — there is nothing to ask about.

What we collect

To sign you in

Your phone number. It is the only way to sign in, and it is how your friends’ invites find you. We send it to Twilio to deliver the six-digit code; we store the number itself and a hash of the code while it is valid.

So your squad knows who you are

A display name and, if you add one, a profile photo. Photos are re-encoded before they leave your phone, which strips the location and camera metadata the original file carried.

The point of the app

The videos you record and the still frame taken from each one. Also the text you write: the chores you set other people, the names you give squads, and the reason you give when you write a sick note. Bear in mind that all of that is written about, and read by, other people.

If you start a plan

The answers to the eleven questions a plan is built from — your goal, how much time you have, what equipment you own, how you feel about being on camera, and two free-text answers about what you want to become and what stopped you last time. That last pair is the most personal thing this app asks for, and it exists because a plan written without it is a worse plan.

To make the app function

Your time zone, so a day ends when your day ends. A notification token from Apple if you allow notifications. Your subscription status, if you buy one.

To know where people came from

When the app first opens we record a salted hash of your IP address and the time, and try to match it against a link someone clicked in the previous 24 hours. The address itself is not stored, the hash is not reversible without a secret only our server holds, the whole record is deleted after 30 days, and none of it goes to anyone else. We also ask “how did you hear about us” at sign-up, which you can skip.

What we do not collect

No location. No contacts. No health data from your phone. No advertising identifier, no device fingerprint, and no crash-reporting SDK. Homework never asks for access to your photo library — when you pick an existing video, iOS shows you the picker and hands us only the one file you chose.

Who else sees it

These companies process data on our behalf, each for one job. None of them is allowed to use it for anything else, and none of them is an advertising network.

  Product analytics — which screens get used and where people give up.

  Runs the server.

  Runs this website.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising. We would hand something over if a valid legal order required it.

Where AI is involved

The clips you record are sent to Google’s Gemini API for an automated check on whether the task looks done. That check is advisory — your squad decides what a clip is worth, not the model. The plan questions you answer, and the chore text people write, are also sent to Gemini: to write your plan, and to screen text before it is shown to anybody.

Google processes this on our behalf under its API terms. No clip is sent anywhere else, and no clip is used to advertise anything to you.

Analytics, in more detail

We record which screens you open and which actions you take — signing up, handing in, reacting, starting a plan. It is keyed on a random identifier the app generates on install, later joined to your account.

Deliberately not recorded: session replay is off, and so is the automatic capture of on-screen text, because it would send your squad’s names and the chores you write to our analytics provider. Squad names are never sent. Analytics requests go to our own domain and are forwarded from there, so no third-party host appears in the app’s network traffic at all.

How long we keep things

• Your account and clips

  Until you delete your account — with the exception below.

• Sign-in codes

  Five minutes.

• Sign-in sessions

  An hour for the working token, thirty days before you sign in again.

• Install-attribution records

  Thirty days, then deleted automatically.

• Analytics events

  Kept while the account is active.

Deleting your account

There is a Delete account button in the app, on the You tab. It does not need to go through us.

It ends your squad memberships, removes your profile photo from every roster, deletes your notification tokens, signs out every device, and releases your phone number so it can be used to sign up again.

Your clips stay in the feeds of the squads you posted them to, under “Deleted account”. A squad’s feed is a shared record, and the app’s one-take rule cuts both ways: you cannot retake a clip and you cannot withdraw one either. This is worth understanding before you post rather than after. If you want a specific clip taken down, write to us and we will remove it.

Deleting your account does not automatically remove your history from our analytics provider — there is no such operation on their receiving endpoint, and we would rather say so than imply it happens. Ask us and we will do it by hand.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to what we are doing with it. If you are in the UK or the EU those are rights under the GDPR; if you are in California they are rights under the CCPA. We apply them to everybody because running two standards is how you get one of them wrong.

Write to kirk@skate85.ai. One person reads it, so it may take a day or two. We will not charge you and we will not make the app worse for you for having asked.

Age

Homework is not for under-13s, and we do not knowingly collect anything from one. If you believe a child has an account, tell us and we will remove it.

Changes

If we change something that matters, we will change the date at the top and say so in the app. Carrying on using Homework after that is how you accept it.
